Listening to God
One of the most overlooked elements in our relationship with God is hearing Him when He speaks.
God speaks both metaphorically and literally. Look at Psalm 19 as an example. In Psalm 19, David tells us that God is speaking to us every hour of every day through His creation. Just by looking at what God has made, we can see that He is telling us something.
"The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge."
God is speaking through His creation. God also speaks, however, through the Bible.
"The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether."
God has given us His Word in a written form for us to know Him and what He desires.
Once we know where to look to hear the voice of God, in His work and in His Word, we can learn how to discern His voice when He speaks.
More on this tomorrow.
